ACTION

Antiseptic, Spasmolytic, Aromatic, Tonic, Antioxidative, Expectorant, Carminative, Anti-tussive, Bactericidal, Anthelmintic, Astringent.

Bronchitis, Laryngitis, Chronic gastritis, Dyspepsia, Tonsillitis, Laryngitis. Since thyme is very effective in relaxing smooth muscles, it will be useful in asthma and hypertension. Thymol is a strong antiseptic which should be useful for bacterial and fungal infections. It has also been mentioned as having anti-aging properties.

RESEARCH

Eriodicytol, a flavonoid in thyme was found to be antioxidative. It inhibited superoxide anion production in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system and protected red cells against oxidative hemolysis. (Haraguchi, H. et al. 1996).

Flavonoids in thyme relax smooth muscles by inhibiting responses to agonists which stimulate specific receptors (acetylcholine, histamine, L-noradrenaline).(Van Den Broucke, C.O, 1983)..
