The Liver Tonic was formulated to:

RESEARCH

Cynara scolymus, like Carduus marianus protects the liver against toxins and infection (Samochowiec, L et al. 1971). In addition, it stimulated regeneration of liver cells (Maros, T. et al. 1966, 1968).

Schisandra chinensis was found to protect the liver against aflatoxin B1 and Cd toxicity (Ip, S.P. et al. 1996). It also stimulated liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (Kubo, S. et al. 1992). During recent times, Schisandra has been found to be effective in viral and chemical induced hepatitis (Liu, G.T. 1989).

Silymarin's hepatoprotective effects are accomplished via several mechanisms including antioxidation, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, enhanced liver detoxification via inhibition of Phase I detoxification and enhanced glucuronidation, and protection of glutathione depletion (Monograph:Silybum marianum [MilkThistle], 1999).

Silybum marianum (milk thistle) has been shown to have clinical applications in the treatment of toxic hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, ischemic injury, radiation toxicity, and viral hepatitis via its antioxidative, anti-lipid peroxidative, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, and liver regenerating effects. (Luper, S. 1998)

Curcumin is a natural phenolic compound found in the rhizomes of Curcuma longa and endowed with beneficial biological activities including antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and hepatoprotective effects (Romiti, N. et al. 1998)
